Tenterfield
We are set in the beautiful New England Region of northern New South Wales, surrounded by more than 10 national parks over an area of 713,439 hectares. Tenterfield is known as the "Birthplace of our Nation" because, from the famous School of Arts building on 24th October 1889, Henry Parkes presented his famous Federation speech which ultimately led to the Federation of all Australian Colonies in 1901. We are also the home of Peter Allen the Boy from Oz, and where Banjo Patterson married his sweetheart Miss Alice Walker. We are also the home of Major Thomas who was "Breaker Morant's" legal represenative.
The Tenterfield & District Tennis Association has been operating since, at least the 1930’s. We have a current membership aged from young boys and girls to (very) mature men and women and all ages in between. Our club provides the opportunity to participate in weekly coaching sessions as well as regular clinics with a professional tennis coach. We also provide the opportunity to play socially as well as in a structured team environment. Social tennis is played on Thursdays and Saturdays, fixtures are played on Monday nights (Sept – June), skills lessons are on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, Saturday mornings and coaching clinics are held in throughout the year.
Membership
Without a professional coach, membership declined in recent years, but, since early 2011 we have had access to a professional coach and membership and support has increased. We fully anticipate this trend to continue especially with the plans we have for upgrading the facilities. Currently, we have a total of 21 junior and 37 adult players together with a number of keen supporters. We are also aware of several potential players/members who would play if the facilities were in a safer/better condition.
Participation
In addition to our financial members, the tennis court facility is rented to the local primary and high schools, a group of indigenous players as well as other social groups. The local art group also uses our club house for its weekly meeting.
In context of our community
Our Association has been a major contributor to a recent initiative to develop an overall proposal for upgrading the sporting facilities in Tenterfield and the formation of a 355 Committee with the local Council. It is now time for us to move methodically towards improving our tennis facilities.
